The Incident Unfolded

On October 9, 2024, around 6 to 7 pm, four police officers—Inspectors Mohammed Yusuf, Reuben, Malik, and Prince—stormed the Ikota, Lekki residence of Mr. Segun Okubajo. They allegedly destroyed his home security cameras, seized electronic devices, and forcibly took him to Abuja.

“They destroyed my home security cameras, took the CCTV hard drive, spoilt the console and openly said they were there to ‘chop from my money,’” Okubajo recounted.

Despite having no criminal complaints against him, Okubajo was held incommunicado, and his family was pressured into paying a ransom. The officers initially demanded N1 billion but eventually settled for N151.5 million, which the family raised through loans and contributions.

After the ordeal, Okubajo fled abroad and has since faced continued threats to his life and that of his family.

Public Outrage and Calls for Justice

The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with many Nigerians expressing their dismay on social media platforms.

This harrowing incident underscores the urgent need for reform within the Nigerian Police Force. When those entrusted with our safety become threats themselves, it erodes public trust and endangers the very fabric of society. The authorities must act decisively to investigate this case, bring the perpetrators to justice, and implement measures to prevent such abuses in the future.
