MTN invests N1.6tn to expand network capacity across Nigeria

MTN network investment has crossed N1.6tn since January 2025 as the telecom operator expands capacity to handle Nigeria’s growing demand for mobile data and digital services.

LAGOS, NIGERIA — MTN Nigeria has invested more than N1.6 trillion in network infrastructure since January 2025 as the telecommunications company expands capacity to meet rising demand for mobile data and improve service quality across Nigeria. The latest investment figure covers spending on network expansion and related infrastructure, with the company increasing its capital deployment as Nigerians rely more heavily on mobile internet for work, banking, entertainment, education and business. The development comes as data traffic continues to grow rapidly across the country, putting pressure on telecommunications operators to expand capacity ahead of demand. Recent company figures show that MTN’s subscriber base has also grown, reinforcing the need for more network resources as smartphone use and digital services spread across different parts of Nigeria.

The scale of the spending becomes clearer when compared with MTN’s investment in 2025. The company said it invested about N1 trillion in network expansion and modernisation during the year, more than double its capital expenditure in the previous year. That spending supported additional base stations, fibre rollout, increased network capacity and improvements aimed at strengthening network resilience. MTN Chief Executive Officer Karl Toriola has linked the investment drive to the rapid growth in data consumption, saying the company needs sustained investment to support the country’s increasing digital activity. Company figures showed that MTN’s subscriber base reached 87.3 million at the end of 2025, while active data subscribers stood at 53.2 million and data traffic increased by 34 per cent during the year.

The spending has continued into 2026. MTN reported that it invested N390.3 billion in capital expenditure, excluding lease assets, during the first quarter of the year, representing a 92.8 per cent increase from N202.4 billion recorded in the corresponding period of 2025. The company said it directed the investment towards network capacity and quality of experience as demand for data and digital financial services continued to rise. By the first half of 2026, another report put MTN’s network investment for the period at N620.5 billion, with the money going into capacity expansion, service improvements and preparations for continued growth in internet traffic. The figures show that network spending remains a major part of MTN’s strategy even as the company balances infrastructure costs with the need to improve services for millions of subscribers.

A review of MTN’s latest figures by Newstridez also shows how closely the investment is tied to the changing way Nigerians use telecommunications services. Data is no longer mainly an add-on for mobile subscribers. Nigerians increasingly depend on mobile connections for transfers, online shopping, remote work, social media, video streaming, school activities and communication with customers. MTN’s data revenue reached N1.70 trillion in the first half of 2026, according to BusinessDay-related reporting, overtaking voice revenue of N993 billion. The shift means that network capacity now directly affects not only telecom customers but also businesses and individuals whose daily activities depend on reliable internet access. MTN’s latest network figures indicate population coverage of 93.7 per cent on 2G, 87.6 per cent on 3G, 84.6 per cent on 4G and 12.8 per cent on 5G, while its network had expanded to more than 62,000 sites.

The investment also comes against a difficult operating environment for Nigeria’s telecom industry. Operators face high energy costs, foreign exchange pressures, infrastructure expenses and growing demand for data. In June, MTN said it had committed another N1 trillion for network upgrades in 2026, while acknowledging that no operator could guarantee perfect network quality across the country. The company made the comments during a stakeholder engagement in Lagos where subscribers raised concerns about network disruptions, data usage and service quality. The continued spending therefore places pressure on MTN to deliver noticeable improvements, especially in areas where users still experience congestion or poor coverage. The company has also expanded infrastructure-sharing arrangements within the industry as operators seek ways to reduce costs and extend coverage more efficiently.

For Nigerian consumers, the key question is whether the investment will translate into faster and more reliable connections. Better network capacity could reduce congestion, improve data speeds and support the wider growth of digital services, particularly as more Nigerians depend on mobile internet for income and everyday transactions. MTN’s own figures show the scale of its network footprint, with more than 43,000 kilometres of fibre listed among its current infrastructure and population coverage above 93 per cent on its investor information page. The company is also the first mobile network operator to launch 5G in Nigeria, according to its corporate information.

The latest investment points to a telecommunications market that is moving steadily from voice calls towards data-driven services. With data traffic and smartphone use continuing to rise, MTN is expected to maintain spending on network capacity while working to improve service quality across its coverage areas. The company’s ability to sustain that investment will depend on subscriber demand, operating costs, regulation and the broader Nigerian economy. For millions of Nigerians, however, the real measure will remain simple: whether the additional billions invested translate into stronger signals, faster data and more dependable connectivity when they need it most.
