Fresh details have surfaced over the reported death of Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo after filmmaker and close associate Stanley Ontop opened up about the actor’s alleged private health battle.
According to a report by Legit.ng, Stanley claimed the actor had been battling stage 4 liver cancer since 2024, away from public attention. The revelation has triggered massive reactions across social media, making it one of the biggest viral celebrity stories dominating Nigerian celebrity news within the last few hours.
In a now-viral Instagram post, Stanley alleged that Alex underwent treatment and later had a liver transplant in a desperate effort to survive the illness.
“Alex was diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer in 2024. After undergoing treatment and a liver transplant, he briefly returned to work. Unfortunately, the liver failed again and complications arose,” Stanley wrote.
According to him, the actor briefly returned to movie sets before his condition reportedly worsened again. He also appealed to Nigerians to stop spreading unverified rumours surrounding the actor’s death and allow the family mourn privately.
The story has continued to trend across X, Facebook and Instagram, with many fans revisiting old posts questioning the actor’s sudden disappearance from social media months ago. Earlier reports had raised concerns over his noticeable weight loss and reduced online presence.
Meanwhile, tributes from colleagues and fans have continued to pour in across the Naija entertainment news space, as many described the reported loss as heartbreaking for Nollywood.
As at the time of filing this report, no official statement has been released by the actor’s family directly confirming the health claims circulating online.
