A Kano political commentator has been killed at his home in Kumbotso, with police arresting two suspects as investigators probe the circumstances surrounding the attack.
KANO, NIGERIA — Police have arrested two suspects over the killing of Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu, a prominent Kano political commentator whose body was found at his residence in Gaida, Kumbotso Local Government Area.
The Kano State Police Command said its tactical units, working with community stakeholders, arrested the two suspects after an intelligence-driven operation. Police spokesman CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa said the suspects remained in custody while investigators obtained statements and carried out forensic procedures to establish the facts and motive behind the killing.

The 54-year-old commentator, popularly known as Dan Shagamu, operated the social media platform Dan-Shagamu International, where he discussed political, religious and community issues. Reports said he had also worked with Pyramid Radio and the Nigerian Television Authority before becoming widely known for his online commentary.
Before his death, Dan Shagamu had reportedly posted a video asking the police, the Kano State Government and the Emir of Kano to intervene over alleged threats from people in his neighbourhood. He accused some neighbours and their children of repeatedly harassing him and said stones had been thrown at his house.
The warning has now become a central part of the public debate surrounding his death. However, police have not established that the killing was connected to his political commentary or the threats he previously reported.
According to the police spokesman, investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the attack and have not publicly confirmed the motive. This means claims that Dan Shagamu was killed because of his political views remain unproven at this stage.
Family members said they were alerted after the commentator became unreachable. His sister, Aisha Muhammad Lawal, told reporters that his body was later discovered at the residence. She said the family was not accusing anyone but wanted the authorities to conduct a proper investigation and ensure justice.
Reports from Kano said Dan Shagamu’s body was taken to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, where a medical doctor confirmed his death. Police subsequently began investigating the circumstances surrounding the killing and moved quickly to arrest two suspects.
The arrests have not resulted in any conviction. The identities of the suspects and the specific evidence linking them to the killing have not been publicly disclosed by the police. Investigators are expected to establish their individual roles, determine the motive and identify any other person who may have been involved.

Kwankwaso described the killing as disturbing and called on the Kano State Government to establish an investigative panel. He also urged both state and federal authorities to protect opposition voices and citizens exercising their right to express political opinions.
Amnesty International separately condemned the killing and demanded a full investigation. The organisation said authorities must ensure that anyone responsible is brought to justice, while expressing concern about threats, intimidation and violence ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The case has therefore raised two separate issues: the immediate investigation into Dan Shagamu’s murder and the wider question of security for political commentators, journalists and other outspoken citizens.
For residents of Kano, the police investigation will be closely watched because the killing occurred at a time when political activity and public debate are intensifying ahead of the 2027 elections. Any evidence linking the murder to political expression could carry wider implications, but authorities have yet to establish such a connection.
