INEC Uploads NDC Logo, Leadership After Court Victory
SPREAD THE LOVE

INEC has uploaded the NDC logo and updated the party’s leadership on its official portal in Abuja after a Federal High Court ruling. The move gives the party fresh electoral recognition ahead of 2027.

ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Independent National Electoral Commission has uploaded the modified logo of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and updated the party’s national leadership on its official political parties portal, following a Federal High Court judgment in Abuja directing the commission to recognise the design.

According to the INEC portal, the party’s logo and five key leadership positions now carry the notation “BY COURT ORDER.” The commission lists Senator Cleopas Moses Zuwoghe as national chairman, Barrister Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu as national secretary, John Odey as national treasurer, Mainasara Abubakar Sani as national financial secretary and Reuben Egwuaba as national legal adviser.

Data reviewed by Newstridez on INEC’s political parties portal confirms that the commission has published the NDC under its full name, Nigeria Democratic Congress, with the acronym NDC and the modified logo now displayed alongside the party’s leadership details. The update follows a fresh court ruling on the party’s dispute with INEC over its identity and logo.

The Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, ordered INEC to approve and immediately upload the modified logo after the NDC challenged the commission’s refusal to recognise its new design. The judgment followed an originating summons filed by the party against the electoral body on August 11, 2026.

The court’s order covered the logo, symbol and colours adopted by the party. It also restrained INEC, its officers, agents and representatives from interfering with the NDC’s use of the modified design for political activities and elections conducted by the commission.

The approved design features a digitally created two-finger victory sign against a blue background, with the letters “NDC” displayed in red. The court held that INEC’s earlier refusal to recognise the modified design was unconstitutional and illegal after considering provisions of the 1999 Constitution and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

The development follows months of legal and administrative disputes surrounding the NDC’s registration and identity. The party had initially faced resistance from INEC over its proposed logo before a Federal High Court in Lokoja ordered the commission to recognise and register it as a political party in December 2025.

That earlier judgment later became the subject of another court battle after the Peace Movement Party argued that its interests had been affected because it had not been joined in the original case. In June 2026, Justice Isah Dashen of the Federal High Court in Lokoja set aside the earlier judgment and ordered that the substantive dispute be heard afresh.

The NDC rejected that ruling and appealed, maintaining that the judgment did not amount to a final deregistration of the party. The latest Abuja judgment dealt specifically with the modified logo and ordered INEC to recognise and publish it, creating a new development in the party’s continuing legal battle with the electoral commission.

Reacting to the Abuja judgment, Senator Seriake Dickson, the NDC national leader, described the decision as a vindication of the party’s position. Dickson, a former Bayelsa governor and serving senator for Bayelsa West, said the party had approved the modified logo at its first National Executive Committee meeting before submitting it to INEC.

Dickson said INEC initially uploaded the modified design but later removed it and reverted to the logo used when the party was originally registered. He urged NDC candidates and members to immediately adopt the court-recognised design on campaign materials, including posters, banners and other publicity materials.

The latest update is significant for the party as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections. The NDC is seeking to establish a clear identity before voters, candidates and election officials, particularly after months of uncertainty over its registration, logo and internal structure.

The party is also positioning itself around prominent opposition figures. Peter Obi is listed as the NDC’s presidential candidate in reports on the party’s 2027 preparations, while the party has continued to feature prominent political figures in its campaign structure.

For voters, the logo issue goes beyond party branding because political symbols appear on election materials and help voters identify candidates on the ballot. A change recognised by INEC therefore matters to candidates preparing campaign materials and to supporters who need to know which symbol represents the party during the electoral process.

INEC’s latest portal update provides a clearer public record of the NDC’s current logo and listed leadership, but it does not automatically resolve every dispute involving the party. Earlier court proceedings, candidate nominations and other internal disagreements can still generate further legal challenges.

As at the time of filing this report, INEC’s political parties portal lists the NDC logo and the five national officers under a “BY COURT ORDER” designation. The party has also indicated that it will provide further guidance to candidates, members and voters on the use of the approved design.

The next phase will depend on how the NDC and INEC implement the latest court order and whether other parties or interested groups pursue further legal action. With the 2027 elections approaching, the recognition of the modified logo gives the NDC a clearer electoral identity while its wider legal and political battles continue.
