Several veteran Nollywood actors have faced serious health challenges in recent years. From cancer and stroke to kidney disease and major surgeries, their struggles have drawn widespread concern across Nigeria.
LAGOS, NIGERIA — Several Nollywood actors have faced major health challenges in recent years, with some requiring prolonged hospital treatment, surgery and public support. The latest concern involves veteran actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, whose daughters recently appealed for urgent medical assistance after they said he was battling stage-four cancer.

Ogogo’s daughters made separate appeals on Instagram, asking medical professionals and people with access to cancer treatment facilities to help their father. They said their request focused on finding appropriate medical care rather than raising money, while also claiming that hospitals had stopped treating the actor. As at the time of filing this report, the family had not publicly released detailed medical records or independently verified the specific cancer diagnosis.
The development has renewed attention on the health struggles that several familiar faces of Nigerian cinema have experienced over the years. Some actors recovered after receiving treatment, while others died following prolonged illnesses. Their experiences have also repeatedly sparked public conversations about medical costs, access to specialist treatment and the financial pressure that serious illness can place on families in Nigeria.
One of the most widely reported cases involved Zack Orji, who suffered a serious medical emergency in December 2023 after he collapsed in a bathroom. The veteran actor later revealed that he remained unconscious for several hours and eventually underwent two brain surgeries in Nigeria. In an interview with Punch in April 2024, Orji described the experience as a fight for his life.
Orji said doctors performed the surgeries at the Brain and Spine Consortium in Nigeria. He also explained that medical professionals recommended the facility after he was taken to the National Hospital in Abuja. His recovery became a major subject of public interest, particularly after videos and reports about his condition circulated widely online.
The actor later spoke about what the experience taught him about life, work and healthcare. He said his demanding filming schedule had left him with insufficient rest before the incident. His account also offered a rare personal look at the recovery process of a Nigerian actor who faced a serious medical emergency but eventually returned to public life.
Another major case involved John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu. The comic actor became seriously ill in 2023 and appealed to Nigerians for prayers and financial assistance. His family later announced that he had undergone seven surgeries and that doctors had amputated one of his legs to keep him alive and improve his chances of recovery.
The family initially kept the public informed about his condition through social media, while Nigerians, celebrities and organisations contributed towards his medical expenses. Later reports said the actor suffered from blood-clotting problems involving diseased blood vessels in his leg, although the family rejected some claims circulating online about the cause of his illness. Mr Ibu died in March 2024 after his prolonged health battle.
Amaechi Muonagor also attracted nationwide concern after his health deteriorated in 2023. His cousin, Tony Muonagor, disclosed that the actor was dealing with kidney disease, diabetes and stroke and undergoing weekly dialysis and other treatment at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital in Nnewi. The family had carried much of the treatment cost before publicly seeking additional assistance.
Muonagor’s condition later became more severe. The Actors Guild of Nigeria’s Enugu chapter said after his death in March 2024 that he had battled diabetes for more than a decade and that his condition worsened with stroke and kidney failure. He died at the age of 61, leaving behind a career that included several popular Nollywood productions.
Another veteran who has faced a long-running health challenge is Olu Jacobs, one of the most respected names in Nigerian cinema. His wife, actress Joke Silva, previously spoke publicly about his diagnosis of Dementia with Lewy bodies, a condition that affects thinking, movement and other brain functions. The family has also repeatedly pushed back against false reports of his death.
In June 2024, Jacobs’ son, Soji, told Channels Television that the actor was alive after another death rumour spread online. The family released a video showing the veteran actor at home, reinforcing the need for Nigerians to verify sensitive health and death reports before sharing them.
Prince Emeka Ani has also spoken publicly about serious health problems. In 2021, the veteran actor appealed for assistance after suffering from diabetes, a persistent sore and a partial stroke. Reports at the time said the wound had failed to heal and that he needed further medical treatment.
Ani later said he had spent years dealing with diabetes and related health problems. His case generated public concern because he had previously sought medical treatment in Germany and continued to struggle with his condition. While later reports carried his claims about improvement after using herbal products, such claims should not replace advice or treatment from qualified medical professionals.
The cases of these actors show how quickly serious illnesses can change the lives of people who have spent decades entertaining Nigerian audiences. They also show the role that families, colleagues, fans, religious organisations and other well-wishers often play when medical treatment becomes expensive or prolonged.
For Nigerians, the stories carry another lesson: health information involving public figures needs careful handling. Social media can help families reach people who may provide assistance, but it can also spread unverified diagnoses, false death reports and misleading claims about treatment. Medical conditions should therefore come from the affected person, family, hospital or another credible source whenever possible.
The latest concern surrounding Ogogo has again placed the health of veteran Nollywood stars in the public spotlight. His daughters are seeking medical assistance, while the details of his condition remain based largely on their public appeals. For the other actors who have faced serious illnesses, their stories range from difficult recoveries to tragic deaths, leaving a lasting reminder of the human struggles behind Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
