“Aunty Funke, I’m Greeting You…” — The Cold Snub That Has Broken Nollywood’s Peace Treaty
Sunday night, March 29, 2026. The Balmoral Hall, Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos. Iyabo Ojo‘s film premiere for The Return of Arinzo was supposed to be a celebration. Glamour, industry royalty, camera flashes. Standard Nollywood premiere energy.
Then everything shifted.
Toyin Abraham walked toward Funke Akindele‘s table. Cameras were rolling. She turned to Funke and appeared to say “Aunty Funke” — reaching out a greeting hand. Funke maintained a stern expression and looked away. Completely. Toyin then turned to Williams Benson seated nearby, tried once more with Funke — still nothing. She gathered herself, greeted Iyabo Ojo and Mercy Aigbe warmly, and walked away.
That few seconds? That is the clip that has broken the internet.
The fallout was swift and personal. Within hours, Toyin Abraham unfollowed Funke Akindele on Instagram. Funke also unfollowed Toyin. Both actions confirmed what many fans had suspected — this is not a misunderstanding. This is a real rift.

Now here is the tea on what may have triggered this.
Many fans believe Funke has justification to hold a grudge, because Toyin previously appeared to align with filmmaker Kunle Afolayan‘s criticism of Funke’s box office dominance. That episode from earlier this year cut deep. Funke, who had just grossed a record-breaking ₦2.4 billion with Behind The Scenes, was essentially dismissed. Toyin’s perceived alignment with the criticism — even indirectly — was clearly not forgotten.
The irony? Just days before the premiere incident, Funke Akindele had actually publicly defended both herself and Toyin Abraham against online body-shaming. Fans had taken that as a sign of quiet solidarity between the two women. That perception is now completely shattered.
Enter Nkechi Blessing Sunday. And this is where things get even more interesting.
Nkechi, who has had her own complicated history with Toyin — they were once close, fell out publicly, then reconciled — had left a comment on Funke Akindele’s social media page. Internet users immediately called her out, branding her a double-sided person for commenting favorably on Funke’s post while having had beef with Toyin, Funke’s perceived rival.

Nkechi did not take that lying down. She came out swinging. Her message was clear: just because she once had issues with Toyin does not make her a person who takes sides based on personal history. She said she has never been in a camp — not Toyin’s camp, not Funke’s camp. She made the point that people misread her history with Toyin as meaning she must automatically take Toyin’s side in every industry conflict. She rejected that framing completely.

She also addressed the context of the Funke-Toyin situation, saying that watching the video, the emotions were there for everyone to see and that she, like every other Nigerian, was simply reacting to what played out publicly.
For context, this tension between Funke and Toyin is years in the making. The rivalry runs back to competing box office releases, allegations of screening bias, and persistent industry gossip. Despite multiple apparent reconciliations — including a September 2025 moment where both actresses were seen dancing together at a premiere — the relationship clearly never fully stabilized.
Both women are at the peak of their careers. Toyin’s Oversabi Aunty crossed ₦1 billion in January 2026, while Funke’s Behind The Scenes became the first Nollywood film to cross ₦2 billion. Two queens. One industry. And apparently, one too many unresolved conversations.
The question everyone is asking right now: Will either of them speak publicly? Or will the silence say everything?
