Abuja Medical Doctors Demand Urgent Action
The Abuja Chapter of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) has issued a solemn warning to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, articulating that their members are prepared to embark on a strike within 14 days if their grievances are not satisfactorily addressed. Dr George Ebong, the association’s President, highlighted this ultimatum during a media briefing at Wuse Hospital, commending the Minister for his infrastructural efforts but emphasising the dire need to alleviate doctors’ welfare challenges. Human Capital Must Not Be Overlooked
While Dr Ebong acknowledges Wike’s commendable infrastructural developments, he insists that human capital development must not be neglected. The association demands immediate payment of their six-month salary arrears and acceleration of other allowances and entitlements, warning of potential hospital closures. The ARD also calls for policy revisions, such as reducing the residency period to two years and ramping up healthcare staffing to bridge existing shortages.
What are your thoughts on the balance between infrastructural development and human capital investment?
