The reopening depends on resolving political and security issues. Following his ousting, severe damage was inflicted on the embassy by insurgents. For Iran, Assad was a vital ally against Israel, facilitating arms transport to Hezbollah. Tehran labels the ruling HTS in Damascus as terrorists.
