Mobile Technology Lifts Millions from Poverty
Mobile technology, as highlighted in the GSMA’s 2023 Mobile Industry Impact Report, has been pivotal in reducing poverty and enhancing lives, especially in Nigeria. Citing a World Bank report, the GSMA revealed that mobile broadband lifted two million Nigerians out of extreme poverty between 2010 and 2016, reducing poverty by 1.5 percentage points. The report emphasized the economic significance, noting a $500 billion increase in value generated by mobile tech over five years. Additionally, mobile phones have facilitated educational, governmental, and financial access, boosting Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievements. However, challenges like rising inflation are affecting mobile usage. The GSMA stresses collaboration with stakeholders to enhance mobile technology’s impact globally.
